Accomodation

Mercure Hotel Caen

Across the street from the Port de Plaisance, this casual hotel is a 7-minute walk from the Abbey of Sainte-Trinité, an 11-minute walk from the Musée de Normandie and 8 km from the Mémorial de Caen.

The warm rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, desks, and tea and coffeemaking facilities. Suites add pull-out sofas.

Amenities include a 24/7 exercise room, as well as a bar with views of the port. There’s also a business center, plus 17 meeting rooms. Parking is available. Pets are welcome for a fee.

DAY 1 - Tuesday 01st October

10.00hrs          Depart from Limerick [Bus Stop at Kilmurray Lodge, Plassey Road)

10.20hrs          Pick-up at Birdhill, Jct 27 M7 Applegreen Services

11.00hrs          Pick-up at Moneygall, Jct 23 M7 Barack Obama Plaza

11.45hrs          Pick-up at The Maldron Hotel, Portlaoise

12.45hrs          Pick-up Naas – (Tougher’s restaurant)

13.15hrs          Pick-up at Joels Restaurant, Newlands Cross, Dublin

 

14.30hrs          Pick-up at Irish Ferries Terminal 1, Dublin Port

16.00hrs          Depart Dublin Port for overnight sailing to Cherbourg on W.B. Yeats.

DAY 2 -Wednesday 02nd October

11.30hrs          Arrive Cherbourg and drive towards Caen for 2 night stay at Mercure Hotel with visits en route to Sainte Mere Eglise, Utah Beach and  La Cambe (Gernan Cemetry)

12.40hrs          Sainte Mere Eglise – First town to be liberated on June 6. Place where Private John Steele feigned death hanging from the steeple of church in the  Square

14.20hrs          Depart St. Mere Eglise

14.45hrs          Arrive Utah Beach – Utah Beach monuments and memorials. The Museum in honour of the men who came ashore here is built on the site of the remains of the former German Bunkers

16.45hrs          Depart Utah Beach

17.10hrs          Arrive La Cambe –  The largest German War Cemetery in Normandy where the remains of over 21,000 German soldiers are buried.

17.55hrs         Depart La Cambe
18.40hrs        Arrive Caen – Mercure Hotel for two nights stay on a bed and continental breakfast basis with dinner on first night

DAY 3 - Thursday 03rd October

09.15hrs          Visit to Pegasus Bridge (monuments and memoirials to the 6th Parachute Regiment) and  also to see Café Gondree the first house liberated on the 5th June at 11.16PM.

 

11.00hrs          Depart Pegasus Bridge

11.40hrs          Visit to Juno Beach Centre (Canadian memorial and museum to the 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives in the 2nd World War)

13.00hrs          Depart Juno beach

 

13.20hrs          Visit to Arromanches (Gold Beach) to see the remains of the former Mulberry Harbour and monuments. Visit to the 360 degree circular cinema on the clifftop overlooking Gold Beach (British sector)

15.15hrs          Depart Arromanches

15.30hrs          Visit to Longues Sur Mer to see the remains of the former German Gun Battery.

16.10hrs          Depart Longues sur Mer

16.30hrs          Arrive Bayeux

18.00hrs          Depart Bayeux back to hotel

18.30hrs          Arrive Hotel

DAY 4 - Friday 5th October

08.50hrs          Depart Hotel

09.40hrs          Arrive Vierville Sur Mer for drive along OMAHA beach with the remains of former German Bunkers and monuments

09.55hrs          Depart Vierville Sur Mer

10.00hrs          Visit to American Cemetery with the graves of over 9,000 American soldiers, monuments and memorials and orientation table overlooking Omaha Beach

 

12.30hrs          Depart the Cemetery

13.00hrs          Pointe du Hoc – Famous cliff top site taken by the US Rangers under the command of COL. Jame E. Rudder. Poite du Hoc was part of the German Atlantic Wall fortifications.

14.00hrs          Arrive Cherbourg

16.30hrs          Depart Cherbourg on Irish Ferries W.B.Yeats

DAY 5 - Saturday 6th October

10.45hrs          Arrive Dublin North Wall
